PROGRAMS & EXHIBITION

SEPTEMBER PROGRAMS

SHG Youth Artivists Penelope Bernal and Emily Ordaz will provide free portraits at our next Family Workshop, and you can create your customizable frame to take the photo home!

This pop-up contributes to a more extensive archive project intended to collect stories from Eastside residents regarding housing rights, gentrification, and social housing. Come prepared to share your experiences about your neighborhood and dream about what our city could look like if we had all the power to change it.

This workshop is part of Behind the Photo, in partnership with Eastside LEADS.

Our one-day Do-It-Yourself Screen Printing with screen filler and drawing fluid workshop, led by Teaching Artist Gaby Claro, is coming up! Learn how to use Speedball's drawing fluid and screen filler which is an easy way to start creating screen-printed art at home.

With brushes and other drawing tools, you can draw your design directly onto a screen. Prepared screens can be used to print on a variety of surfaces including paper, textiles, and clothing. With this class, you can make posters or print your design on a tote bag. Space is limited, registration is required.

EXHIBITION OPENING

 RSVP HERE

We hope that you’ll join us for the Opening Reception of our forthcoming exhibition, Sinks: Places We Call Home, on Saturday, September 21, 2024, from 5:00 PM-8:00 PM at the Luckman Gallery, on the campus of Cal State University, Los Angeles. Paid parking is available on campus at parking Structure C (4 hours - $5/ All Day - $10). RSVP here today!

The exhibition is curated by Marvella Muro with curatorial assistance by Ana Guajardo, as part of the Getty PST ART: Art & Science Collide initiative. This innovative exhibition - produced in partnership with artists Maru Garcia and Beatriz Jaramillo, the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, community scientists, and partners - highlights the environmental disparities created by manufacturing sites in two communities located near Self Help Graphics: the former Exide Battery plant in Vernon and former Athens Tank Farm (Exxon Mobil) site in Willowbrook. The exhibition elevates the voices and stories of the people who form these neighborhoods and informs audiences about land contamination and alternative solutions.

Please join us as we commemorate this momentous exhibition and share the outcomes of our scientific research and work at the crossroads of art and science in an effort to heal the earth and neighborhoods.

 RSVP HERE
