We are looking forward to hosting the Biennial Printmaking Summit at the Eastside Print Fair TODAY, September 9, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM), on the campus of East Los Angeles College (ELAC).

Now in its fourth season, our Biennial Printmaking Summit builds bridges among master printers, emerging and advanced printmakers, as well as aspiring youth toward a solid foundation in printmaking. View print demonstrations, participate in workshops and collect prints by participating local artists; including an array of prints from Self Help Graphics’ Professional Printmaking Program ateliers.

Eastside Print Fair participating artists include: Ernesto Vazquez, Kalli Arte, Daniel González, Francis Robateau, Cultivarte Studios, Erick Martinez, Jimmy Saldivar, Harry Diaz, Fabrica Marrano, Cielo y Tierra Collective, Huachumalotus, Xicana Tiahui, Isela Ortiz, Other Books LA, Por La Mano Press y Arte, Viktor Rosas, Tarjetas Con Amor, Las Chicas Peligrosas, Gio Rubio, and Martha Carillo, among many others!

 

Know Before You Go

Self Help Graphics & Art's Biennial Printmaking Summit and Eastside Print Fair are organized in collaboration with VPAM and the Art Department at ELAC.

Location 

The Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM) is located at1301 Avenida Cesar Chavez Monterey Park, CA. 91754, on the campus of East LA College. The museum is on the corner of Avenida Cesar Chavez and Collegian Ave.

 

Parking, Accesibility and Rideshare Drop-Off

Free parking is located on the corner of Floral Dr. and Collegian Ave. Parking is a short, two-block distance, to the museum. VPAM's accessibility and rideshare drop-off is located on Collegian Ave, at the driveway round about, in front of the museum (ELAC S1 Building).

 

Workshops and Panel Discussion

In addition to free general admission entry, there are a few more seats left to attend our free Panel Discussion at 3:00 p.m. and a few more spaces for paid workshops available with registration from 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. If you would like to participate in a workshop or attend the panel, please register now before they sell out! 

 

Workshops

Papermaking Demonstration & Workshop with Teaching Artist, Usen Gandara

Join artist Usen Gandra in this fun and easy workshop and create something usable and beautiful from what would otherwise be an endless amount of junk mail, old newspapers, or magazines. Participants will use found or recycled paper material to mold sheet(s) of paper with a screen and create new sheets of paper! The workshop is 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Meet at 12:55 p.m. at SHG info table.

Experimental Drypoint Techniques with Teaching Artist, Nguyen Ly

Join Nguyen Ly to learn about a printmaking technique developed in the 15th century. Drypoint allows artists to create fluid and expressive imagery by scratching a sharp needle on a metal or plastic plate. Participants will learn this printmaking process, including using the tools, inking the plates, and using a press, leaving with a unique print and contributing to a collaborative group collage. Update! This workshop is 4:30 p.m.-6:00 pm. Meet at 4:25 p.m. at SHG info table.

Experimental Relief Printmaking Workshop: Linocut printed on Cyanotype Paper with Teaching Artist, Viktor Rosas (SOLD OUT)

This workshop invites participants to experiment and create artwork combining linocut and cyanotype processes. Participants must bring a drawing to this advanced printing workshop, allowing the group to focus on the printmaking process at the ELAC art department studio. This workshop is 1:00 p.m.-2:30 pm. Meet at 12:55PM at SHG info table.

 

Panel Discussion

Self Help Graphics Ateliers: A Legacy in Experimental Printmaking Moderated by Scholar, J.V. Decemvirale

As part of Self Help Graphic's 50th Anniversary suite of programs, the Print Summit panel discussion from 3:00 p.m.-4:15 p.m. at VPAM’s Lecture Hall will reflect on the organization's experimental silkscreen atelier program founded in 1983. Scholar J.V. Decemvirale will moderate a conversation with its past and current Master Printers Oscar Duardo, Jose Alpuche, Dewey Tafoya, and artist Barbara Carrasco to discuss the studio's 40 years, Sister Karen's vision for the studio, Stephen Grace's (SHG's first Master Printer) approach in establishing the studio, processes and techniques, and stories.
